The Sports Coach Level 4 Apprenticeship develops the advanced knowledge and practical skills needed to design, deliver, and evaluate effective coaching programmes. This programme supports coaches in progressing their professional practice while making a meaningful impact across a range of sporting environments.
Role Profile
In their day-to-day role, a Sports Coach works closely with and influences the wider coaching team, including assistant coaches, managers, sponsors, boards, and broader industry support networks. This is achieved through the design and delivery of a clear coaching philosophy and professional practice that aligns with organisational vision, strategy, policies, and processes.
Sports Coaches may also influence professional and governing bodies through their applied practice. They regularly assess the effectiveness of their coaching strategies using participant, coach, team, and organisational performance and perception data, enabling continuous improvement and informed decision-making.

Course Summary
The Sports Coach Level 4 Apprenticeship is a 12-18 month programme designed to enhance all areas of coaching practice. Learners are supported to develop their own coaching philosophy, design and implement effective coaching programmes, and promote holistic wellbeing within coaching environments.
Apprentices must achieve a minimum of Level 2 English and Maths before completing the apprenticeship. This Level 4 sports coaching qualification is equivalent to a Higher Education Foundation Degree.
Course Content
Throughout the programme, learners will develop advanced coaching knowledge and practical skills, including:
• Developing a personal coaching philosophy

• Exploring how wider social, cultural, and organisational issues impact coaching
• Developing participant profiles
• Planning, delivering, and reviewing PE curricula and extracurricular sports activities

• Developing knowledge of education standards, trends, frameworks, and contemporary influences
20% Off-The-Job Training
Off-the-job training is defined as learning undertaken outside of normal day-to-day responsibilities that contributes directly to achieving the apprenticeship standard. This structured learning supports apprentices in applying theory to practice while developing the competencies required of a Level 4 Sports Coach.
