Myth-buster #8: Apprenticeships are delivered across ALL sectors

Posted on: 2nd Jun 2025
Apprenticeships

Historically, apprenticeships have been attached to traditional sectors such as construction, plumbing and hairdressing.

It’s sparked a stereotype that modern-day vocational qualifications serve an exclusive purpose to these industries and skillsets.

The reality, however, could not be further from this assumption.

In the last decade, the three biggest sectors for apprenticeships have been business, health and engineering

Although apprenticeships facilitate a ‘hands-on’ form of education and personal development, they are delivered across all sectors from GCSE equivalent right up to a Master’s degree.

In our eighth and penultimate myth-busting blog, we explore how our apprenticeship portfolio at Ignite Training works for businesses of all shapes, sizes and sectors.

Busting the myth

Don’t be mistaken, apprenticeships remain popular in the aforementioned sectors.

Equally, apprenticeship training serves a key purpose to schools, charities, professional sports clubs and businesses of all sizes.

The latest government data tells us SMEs – organisations with 1 to 249 employees – are responsible for 37% of apprenticeship starts in the UK. Sectors apprenticeships are delivered across vary from agriculture, digital, legal, sales and transport.

Advantages of apprenticeship training

With so much potential to upskill existing employees and tailor education to an organisation’s requirements, it’s surprising only 3.2% of UK enterprises choose to invest in the power of apprenticeships.

Perception is perhaps one barrier – the idea that apprenticeships are only relevant to traditional sectors as mentioned.

A lack of understanding of the benefits apprenticeship training can bring to a business is likely another. Here are four of the key reasons why employers should at least consider the value of apprenticeship training:

  1. Focus on employer requirements

Apprenticeships and the associated training are not delivered in a one size fits all approach. Should a business identify a greater need for content creation, there are content creator programmes available for employers to explore and so on.

  1. Tailored training (across multiple levels!)

Education is tailored so learnings and new knowledge is relevant to the organisation, and the job role of the learner.

  1. Funding

In almost all examples, apprenticeship training is funded in its entirety through the levy. You can read more about this by clicking here.

  1. Employee retention

Employees value flexibility and personal development perhaps more than previously. Apprenticeships provide a clear development pathway for employees, and prove you – as an employer – care about enhancing their skillsets and investing in their future.

Apprenticeships for all

At Ignite Training, we work with SMEs, corporates, sports clubs, charities and more to help them achieve their true potential.

Our standards range from Level 2 (GCSE) to Level 5 (Foundation Degree) and cover topics including coaching, teaching, content creation, leadership, management and operations.
